    • He completed his Bachelors in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering at Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea (2006) and his Master's thesis in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, also at Yonisei University.
    • Also had experience at Samsung in 2008 in their 64 Giga NAND Flash memory using a 20 nm process.
    • Arrived as a transfer student from RPI September 2008 pursuing his Ph.D. degree.

    • Ms. Bross commenced September 12, 2005 as the new Electron Beam Lithography Engineer for the OSU Nanoscale Patterning Laboratory.
    • Ms. Bross joined us from TriQuint Semiconductor in Texas where she was also an EBL Engineer since January 2001.
    • Prior to joining TriQuint, Ms. Bross received her BS in Chemistry from Pennsylvania State University.

  1. Ms. Anisha Ramesh. Final Defense on May 17, 2012.
    • Dissertation" "Tunneling Based Quantum Functional Devices and Circuits for Low Power VLSI Design"
      • Developed the first comprehensive tunneling static random access memory (TSRAM) array simulation, examining 4-corner robustness and 6-sigma performance with process variations, complete with pre-charge circuitry and sense amplifiers.
      • Technology transferred Si-based resonant interband tunneling diodes (RITD) from molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) to chemical vapor deposition (CVD), culminating with a mileston of a peak-to-valley current ratio (PVCR) of 5.2 at room temperature on 200mm wafers.
      • Co-invented an ionic barrier coating for advancement of cost-effective in vivo protein sensors.
    • She completed her Masters in Electrical Engineering specializing in Microelectronics at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, India.
    • Arrived from India September 2006 pursuing her Ph.D. degree in ECE.
    • Supported initially by an OSU University Fellowship.
    • Passed her Ph.D. Qualifying Exam (November 2007).

  3. Si-Young Park. Final Defense on November 20, 2009.
    • Dissertation: "Quantum Functional Devics with Extended CMOS Technologies and Various Applications including Millimeter-Wave Detectors"
      • Demonstrated the first Si-based backwards diode grown by chemical vapor deposition.
      • Demonstarted the first Si-based resonant interband tunnel diode (RITD) grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on 200mm wafers.
      • Showed RF performance of Si-based backwards diodes for passive millimeter-wave sensing.
      • Developed a self-aligned, self-limited nanowire process combining self-limiting oxidation of 3D structures and Ge segragation effects induced by oxidation of SiGe alloys.
      • Advanced very low damage plasma etching with inductively-coupled plasma reactive ion etching (ICP-RIE) with a hydrogen bromide chemistry.
    • Received his B.S.E.C.E. from Ohio State University.
    • Completed his M.S.E. (June 2006) in our group on plasma processing issues of Si-based nanoelectronics (see below).
    • Passed his Ph.D. Qualifying Exam (Summer 2007). Passed Ph.D. Candidacy Exam (Fall 2008).

    • Dissertation: "Phonon-Assisted Tunneling in Silicon/Silicon-Germanium Resonant Interband Tunnel Diodes"
      • Studied low-temperature phonon spectra of Si/SiGe RITDs
      • Studied low resistance ohmic contact schemes
      • Performed modeling and analysis.
    • Joined group July 2002 from Physics Department.
    • Worked in group following defense to tie up loose ends and train replacements.
    • Began working in the modeling and characterization group at Maxlinear, Inc. in August 2008.
    • Presently working at Global Foundaries in Albany, New York.

  6. Sung-Yong Chung. Final Defense on October 27, 2005.
    • Dissertation: "Si/SiGe Heterostructures: Materials, Physics, Quantum Functional Devices and Their Integration with Heterostructure Bipolar Transistors"
      • Identified the deep levels systemic to low temperature molecular beam epitaxy (LT-MBE) of Si/SiGe
      • Demonstrated the annihilation of vacancy-related defects during post-growth rapid thermal annealing. Correlated the suppression of defects with the reduction of excess current in Si-based resonant interband tunnel diodes (RITD).
      • First demonstration of a Si-based RITD monolithically integrated with a Si/SiGe heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT). Demonstrated the RITD-HBT tandem as enabling a 3-terminal negative differential resistance (NDR) device with adjustable peaqk-to-valley current ratio (PVCR). The RITD-HBT tandem also was demonstrated as a switching element.
    • Received his B.S.E.E. from Korea University.
    • Completed Master's thesis on Si-based resonant interband tunneling diodes (Summer 2002).
    • Finalist for Best Student Paper award at the 2003 International Electron Devices Meeting.
    • Finalist for Best Student Paper award at the 2005 International Semiconductor Device Research Symposium.

  7. Ms. Yifan Xu. Final Defense on August 2, 2005.
    • Dissertation: "Studies on Field Effect Transistors with Conjugated Polymers and High Permittivity Gate Dielectrics Using Pulsed Plasma Polymerization"
      • Developed the usage of pulsed plasma polymerized dielectrics that are suitable for flexible polymer field effect transistors. PPP films were demonstrated to have permittivities as high as 7-10.
      • Examined the effects of varying channel lengths on polythiophene PFETs and showed that at short channel lengths that the high longitudinal field acts to increase mobility.
      • Developed a photosensitive PFET using the terpolymer BAS-PPE.

    • Received her B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Tianjin University in 1997.
    • Completed Master's thesis on polymer electronics (Fall 2002).

  8. Niu Jin. Final Defense on August 29, 2004.
    • Dissertation: "Si-Based Quantum Functional Tunneling Devices and Their Applications to Logic and Other Future Circuit Topologies"
      • Integrated two Si-based tunnel back-to-back to provide for symmetrical negative differential resistance (NDR) regions.
      • Co-invented a Si-based interband tunnel diode with an added SiGe cladding region to suppress B outdiffusion and lead to an elevated thermal budget for processing.
      • Achieved the world record high current density in an interband Si-based tunnel diode with over a 150 kA/cm2.
      • Vertically integrated two Si-based tunnel diodes and fashioned a tri-state logic element exploiting the multiple NDR regions.
      • Demonstrated a high tolerence to radiation damage and suitability for harsh environments for Si-based interband tunnel diodes.
      • Developed self-aligned quantum dots.
    • Transferred from the University of Delaware (Fall 2000).
    • Completed Master's thesis on Si-based resonant interband tunneling diodes (Fall 2001).

    • Dissertation: "Si-Based Tunnel Diodes for Integrated Circuit Applications."
      • Modeled MSM photodiodes by extracting equivalent circuit. models using HP/EESOF Libra software from measured high frequency S-parameter data.
      • Implementation of VCSEL/MSM/DOE optical I/O buses within an SRAM memory cell.
      • Performed ohmic contact study and tunnel diode study on Group IV materials.
      • Co-inventor of the world's first Si-based resonant interband tunneling diode.
    • Winner of the Laird Fellowship (1997).
    • Winner of the University's Excellence-in-Teaching Teaching Assistant Award (2000).
    • Winner of Allan P. Colburn Prize for Best Dissertation in Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (2000).
    • Worked as a Post-doctoral Researcher (2000-2002) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign under Professor Ilesanmi Adesida.

      • Characterized low resistance ohmic contacts to GeC alloys.
      • First demonstration of rectification in p-GeC/n-Si diodes with low turn-on voltage and photoresponsivity.
      • First demonstration of 1.3 micron photoresponsivity from GeC photodiodes.

      • Schottky barrier heights of transparent conductors on InAlAs.
      • High responsivity InGaAs MSM photodiodes using transparent conductors as the electrodes.
    • Joined Lasertron, Inc. (9/11/95) in Burlington, MA as a Senior Engineer working on the manufacture of 980 nm pump laser diodes for Er-doped fiber amplifiers which are utilized in long distance fiber optic communications systems.
    • Joined Multiplex, Inc. (Summer 1998) in South Plainfield, NJ working on laser diodes.
    • Joined Nortel Networks Optoelectronics Division (Summer 1999) in Billerica, MA.

    • Sung-Yong Chung was born in 1973 in Masan, Korea.
    • He received the B.S.E degree in the Department of Material and Metallurgical Engineering in 1999 from Korea University in Seoul, Korea.
    • In 1999, he worked for a SK global Ltd. In the following year, he stayed at Korea Institute of Science and Engineering as an associate researcher.

  3. Ms. Vidya Gopal. (Fall 2001 - Fall 2004)
    • Vidya came to us from Bangalore, India and completed her MS in Economics (2004).
    • Ms. Gopal worked for the Limited under the Victoria Secret brand following graduation.
    • She now resides in Washington, DC working for the National Geographic.
