DIGITAL CONTROL LABORATORY


Description:

The objective of courses and projects run in this laboratory is to introduce the student to techniques needed for the design and implementation of automatic control systems. Practical applications of the methods studied in these courses include automotive electronic systems, aircraft systems, robotic systems, manufacturing systems, process control systems, space structures, and many others. The student first learns the basics of the software and hardware used for implementation of control systems and sensor and actuation technologies. Next, the student develops a control system, implements it in one of the laboratory testbeds, and evaluates if the control system meets the design specifications. The laboratory is fully equipped with state-of-the-art computer aided control system design software, on both personal computers and a workstation that are networked to a laser printer, and are connected to the internet for easy transport of laboratory data to the EE computing facilities where the student can write a report on the laboratory findings. While EE 757 focuses on the use of conventional control techniques, EE 758 focuses on the use of the latest intelligent control techniques (e.g., fuzzy, neural, expert, and genetic), and the undergraduate design courses emphasize both classes of techniques via independent student projects.
